Affordable copywriting tips for Northampton startups

For any new business, first impressions are so important, and what better way to kick things off with flying colours than through the written word? Clear, confident, and considered copy not only helps to build trust but also ensures your business looks professional from the start. Of course, when the budget is limited, hiring a full-time copywriter isn’t always possible. So, here are five ways to make your words work harder for less.

Use your voice

A key and easy tip to implement is to ensure your words sound like you: real, relatable and human. A good way to start is to think about how you would communicate with your customers face-to-face and apply this to your writing. Try not to overthink things (easier said than done!). For small and local businesses, this approach will prove particularly valuable, as people want to buy from people.

Get to know your audience

Before getting started, take some time to ask yourself a few questions. Who are you trying to speak to? What do they care about? What problems are they facing? This will help you get to know your audience, using language and writing copy that resonates with them. Another piece of advice, if you’re local, let this be known - mention the area and use familiar references.

Think about repurposing

Don’t overlook content that you’ve already created, as you may be able to give it a new lease of life elsewhere. Whether it’s utilising FAQs for blog copy or breaking up existing content to be used on social media, there are plenty of ways to make the most of what you’ve got.

Use free tools

Whilst I will advise that these are approached with caution, there’s an abundance of free resources that can support your copywriting. AI can help you brainstorm and content plan, while tools such as Grammarly are great at offering a second pair of eyes on your writing.

Explore one-off support

If budget allows, another option is to explore one-off support with a freelancer for a one-time audit. Local freelancers (like me!) can help you get started, building strong foundations for you to work from, without the cost of committing to ongoing support.
